Expectant Mums

A special time to take extra care of your teeth...

During pregnancy, hormonal changes and nausea from morning sickness can lead to frequent reflux of acidic contents of the stomach particularly in the second and third months of pregnancy.

Without additional protection at this time, your teeth are at risk of dental erosion – the loss of tooth enamel and exposure of sensitive underlying dentine. GC Tooth Mousse contains vital minerals – calcium and phosphate to help protect and rebuild the tooth surface and help reduce high mouth acid levels.

Important Dental Considerations

  • During pregnancy your teeth need protection from dental erosion due to reflux from morning sickness and higher acid levels in the mouth.
  • Teeth and gums can be more sensitive due to hormonal changes.
  • Taking good care of your teeth and gums will ensure you have healthy teeth and gums during pregnancy.

Useful tips and advice

  • Brushing - Brush twice a day with a soft toothbrush and fluoride toothpaste.
  • Dental Floss - Use dental floss to clean between your teeth where the toothbrush cannot reach.
  • Baking soda mouth rinse - Using home-made baking soda (sodium bicarbonate) mouth rinse before and after meals can neutralize any gastric contents that are refluxed and prevent them from damaging teeth.  Make the mouth rinse fresh daily and rinse thoroughly after meals and any episodes of reflux, then spit out – don’t swallow the rinse. It’s not necessary to rinse with water afterwards.
  • GC Tooth Mousse - Apply Tooth Mousse twice daily after brushing to protect and soothe your teeth and gums. Using a finger, rub a pea-sized amount around the outer surfaces of the teeth.  At night it can be left in place to dissolve slowly providing protection when salivary defenses are reduced.
  • Recaldent® Gum - Chew Recaldent® Gum after meals to help neutralize harmful mouth acids and protect the teeth from decay.
  • Visiting your Dentist - During your pregnancy, ask your dental professional to check your gums and teeth and advise you further on how to care for them.
